EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
