The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
